New Video's DVD doc label, Docurama, has announced the acquisition of six titles from past editions of the Sundance Film Festival. Set to be released on DVD this year are "The Arthur Dong Collection: Stories from the War on Homosexuality" (it includes "Coming Out Under Fire", "Family Fundamentals", and "Licensed to Kill,"), Abby Epstein's "V-Day: Until the Violence Stops" from Sundance 2004, Carlos Bosch & Jose Maria Domenech's "Balseros" and Robb Moss's "The Same River Twice" from Sundance 2003, Liz Garbus' "The Execution of Wanda Jean" from Sundance 2002, and Allie Light and Irving Saraf's "In the Shadow of the Stars" from Sundance '91.
"The inspiration for Docurama and documentaries on DVD began for us at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, where a few of us were standing in line waiting to get into a doc screening. Like so many documentary films at the festival that year, the screening was sold out. Out of that experience came our commitment to bringing the crème of the crop of Sundance docs to the home entertainment market place," said New Video's Steve Savage and Susan Margolin. "Docurama’s previous Sundance doc favorites on DVDs have been well received and are fast becoming ‘must own’ titles and we believe these new titles will only enhance the cache of our catalog."
In Dong's "Stories from the War on Homosexuality," the director explores different aspects of the gay civil rights struggle, including the military in "Coming Out Under Fire", religion in "Family Fundamentals", and hate crimes in "Licensed to Kill". While Bosch and Domenech's "Balseros," an Oscar nominee in 2004, looks at Cuban rafters held at Guantánamo Bay and eventually making it to the United States.
Liz Garbus' "The Execution of Wanda Jean" is described as "the life-and-death battle of Wanda Jean Allen, a twice-convicted murderer on death row." The film aired on HBO's America Undercover series. Meanwhile, Allie Light and Irving Saraf's "In the Shadow of the Stars," winner of the 1991 Academy Award, looks at the San Francisco Opera by introducing the individuals that make up the chorus.
Moss' "The Same River Twice" was an Independent Spirit Award nominee and, mixing old and new footage, has the filmmaker reflecting on a whitewater river experience of 25 years ago. Finally, "V-Day" looks at Eve Ensler's solo Broadway show "The Vagina Monologues" as it grew into the V-Day movement.
Docurama was founded in 1999 by New Video as a label aimed at releasing acclaimed and cutting-edge documentaries. The company has distributed more than 100 docs, including DA Pennebaker’s "Bob Dylan: Dont Look Back," "The Brandon Teena Story," "Southern Comfort," "Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy," "Andy Goldsworthy Rivers and Tides Working With Time," both seasons of Michael Moore’s "The Awful Truth," "Murder on a Sunday Morning," "The Weather Underground," "Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision," "Regret To Inform," "Children Underground," and "Sound and Fury." The company has also released numerous titles in partnership with the Independent Film Channel and P.O.V. New Video also handles DVD releases for A&E Home Video, including The History Channel and Biography.
